From Fresh
To Forgotten

The Slow Press is an independent zine from Singapore dedicated to uncovering stories about food. The team reached out to me to illustrate one of their articles.
Titled "From Fresh To Forgotten", the article focused on the gradual death of Singapore's once vibrant wet market culture and explored possible reasons for this phenomenon. The article is published in their 6th edition “Best Before”.

As I am unfortunately one of the many that prefers the cold sanitary rows upon rows of product in supermarkets, capturing the vibrancy of wet markets and translating that on paper was a difficult endeavour. For this piece, I made a trip down to a neighbouring wet market to reignite my memories, and researched on the typical sights, sounds and tenant/ customer behaviour.

To capture the fluidity of interaction between the people, I chose hand-drawn illustrations, sketch-style. I felt that the imperfections in this style reveals the sometimes common brusque manner of speaking, but it is an quintessential part of the experience. Selected colours were used which were limited to the produce. A paper texture was used as the background, a common material used for wrapping vegetables.
